William of Orange is elected Stadtholder (governor) by Holland, Friesland, Zeeland and Utrecht at the Dort Assembly. His first priority is to renew his attack on the Duke of Alva, but he is forced to wait for the arrival of a French force under the Huguenot leader Coligny to assist him.
