Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II obtains support from the Diet
of Ratisbon for an expedition to Poland to dispute the election of
Stephen Bathory as king. At a meeting of the Polish Estates,
although the majority of the votes had been for Stephen as a
national candidate, a minority had voted for Maximilian himself to
be their new king.
