The death of Cardinal Henry, King of Portugal, leaves five claimants to his throne: Philip II of Spain (the favourite, as grandson of Portuguese king Manuel I), Philibert Duke of Savoy, Ranuccio Duke of Parma, Catherine Duchess of Braganza and Don Antonio, Prior of Crato. Philip II recalls the Duke of Alva from retirement at the castle of Uceda, in order to command an invasion of Portugal.
