Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, accepted the title of Governor of the Netherlands from the Dutch rebels in March. He now already causes divisions among his new subjects. He angers moderates such as Johan van Oldenbarneveldt, the new Advocate of Holland, when he allows the exclusive Calvinists to hold a National Synod at Dort.
