Niccolo Sfondrato is elected Pope Gregory XIV in succession to
Urban VII, who had only held the office for 13 days before his
death. He is a strong supporter of the Catholic League in France
and thus a firm opponent of the claim of Henry of Navarre to the
throne. However, his tenure as Pope is equally short, as he dies
the following October and is succeeded by Innocent IX.
