In Ireland, a rising breaks out in Ulster against Elizabeth I. This is led by Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, in alliance with Hugh O'Donnell, Earl of Tyrconell. These Catholic rebels appeal to Philip II of Spain for support.
