Gabrielle d'Estrées, Henry IV's mistress, dies at the age of 26
after a miscarriage. He had recently secured an annulment of his
marriage to Marguerite de Valois in the hope of marrying Gabrielle,
and is unsurprisingly grief-stricken at the news. The following
year, however, he married Marie de Medici, with whom he had six
children including the future King Louis XIII.
