The Hapburg lands of Styria, Carinthia and Carniola (now parts of Austria and Slovenia) face the imposition of a repressive Counter-Reformation. Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II sees this policy as meeting with success, which drives him to begin persecuting Protestants in Bohemia and Hungary as well. However, this incites a spirit of nationalism in the Protestant population of Bohemia.
