Stephen Bocskai, who had been recognised by both Habsburgs and Ottomans as ruler of Transylvania in 1606, died the same year, and was succeeded by his chief minister, Sigismund Rakoczi. However, Gabriel Bathory had a dynastic claim to the principality, had having signed a treaty with a force of mercenary soldiers, managed to push Rakoczi to resignation. As a result, Bathory became Prince of Transylvania under Turkish suzerainty, ruling until his death in 1613.
