Maffeo Barberini is elected Pope Urban VIII, a position he holds
until his death in 1644. Fearful of the rise of Habsburg power in
Europe, his foreign policy is favourable towards France. He is the
last Pope to use military intervention to extend the territory of
the Papal States, and is also remembered for his patronage of the
arts and his hostility to Galileo Galilei.
