Queen Christina accedes to the throne of Sweden in succession to
her father Gustavus II, and appoints Axel Oxenstiern as Chancellor
and Regent. Only six when she becomes Queen, she is to rule until
1654, when after long years of struggling to hide her personal
Catholic faith as the head of a Lutheran state, she abdicates in
favour of her cousin Charles Gustavus.
