Historical Context Note

The House of Lords rejects the Self-Denying Ordinance, which aims to exclude members of both Commons and Lords from military office in order to make way for more radical un-aristocratic Parliamentarian commanders. Despite this, the Commons immediately appoints Sir Thomas Fairfax as Commander in-Chief, replacing the Earl of Essex.
