Jonathan Swift publishes the first of his 'Drapier's Letters', a series of pamphlets under the pseudonym of M. B. Drapier. He attacks the granting of a licence to mint coinage to William Wood, which he sees as potentially debasing Irish currency, and as an example of British dictation over Ireland.
