Historical Context Note

Louis XV of France has been betrothed to the Spanish Infanta Mariana Victoria for the past four years, but he needs an heir, which she is too young to give him. He now dismisses her from his court. This angers Spain, which as a result makes diplomatic overtures to the Holy Roman Emperor.
