In Portugal, Carvalho becomes First Minister in the wake of the
huge Lisbon earthquake of the previous year. He is noted for the
distinctive architectural style he introduced in the rebuilding of
Lisbon (known as Pombaline after his title as Marquess of Pombal),
and also for his effects in diminishing the influence of the
Inquisition and introducing reforms influenced by the
Enlightenment.
