Tsar Peter III of Russia, who had only acceded to the throne in January, is assassinated for his pro-Prussian policies. He is succeeded by his wife Catherine II ('the Great'), who rules until 1796. She gives the position of Chief Minister to Nikita Ivanovich Panin.
