Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II dies, and is succeeded by his young son, Abdul Mejid, who rules until 1861. He enacts important reforms, and brings the Ottoman Empire more closely into the circle of European nations, forging alliances with Britain and France, but this is not enough to prevent the secession of territories affected by nationalism.
