Queen mother Cristina of Spain, who had been acting as Regent for her daughter Isabella, is forced to resign after a joint revolt of the army and the liberal government against her. After the death of her husband King Ferdinand VII, she had married an army officer, the Duke of Riansares, and attempted to keep this a secret, but when it was revealed, it was highly unpopular with the Spanish people. After her fall from power, she is replaced as Regent by General Espartero.
