James Braun-Ramsay, Earl of Dalhousie, becomes Governor-General
of British India. Under his rule the British acquire additional
territory in the region, through a policy of 'lapse and
annexation', but he is also blamed for ignoring the warning signs
of the 1857 Indian Rebellion which break out shortly after his
departure from the position.
