A Portuguese Jew called Don Pacifico, who had suffered attacks
on his home and possessions while living in Athens, had appealed to
the British government for support. In response, a British fleet
had blockaded Piraeus, the port of Athens, in an attempt to force
Greece into submission. Now at last the Greek Government submits to
British demands for compensation.
