The Hungarian Diet opens, and some of its members call for complete independence and separation from Austria. However, a group led by Ferenc Deak supports what becomes known as the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (Ausgleich). This allows for a Dual Monarchy, whereby the Magyars dominate Hungary and Germans dominate the rest of the Austrian territories, but the two parts of the state hold a single foreign policy.
