William Ewert Gladstone is elected MP for Greenwich, leaving his
previous seat of South Lanarkshire, which has been divided into two
constituencies. He now becomes Prime Minister of Britain for the
first time, serving until 1874, and in total he will hold the
office on no less than four occasions.
