In the American presidental election, Ulysses S. Grant, the
Republican candidate, is re-elected as President with 286 electoral
votes. He defeats Horace Greeley, of the break-away Liberal
Republican party, who only gains 62 votes and dies on 30th
November, soon after the death of his wife.
