Soldiers and labourers in the Cavite province of the Philippines
rise up in mutiny against their Spanish colonial rulers. Although
it fails to spark the hoped-for national uprising, it is often seen
as the beginning of the nationalist movement that leads ultimately
to the revolution of 1896 and to independence.
