In November, the US presidential election produced an uncertain
result, when the Democratic candidate S. J. Tilden secured 184 out
of the 185 electoral votes needed to gain victory, while his
Republican opponent R. B. Hayes received 165. However, 20 votes
were disputed. They are now settled by an electoral commission,
which decides in Hayes' favour.
