In Bulgaria, a military coup d'etat has taken place the previous month with the backing of Russia, which is worried at the liberalism of the current government. Prince Alexander is forced to abdicate, but Liberal prime minister Stephen Stambulov becomes Regent in his place, thus scuppering the Russian plans.
