Venezuelan President Antonio Guzman Blanco, head of state in the
country since 1870, is pushed from power by a coup d'etat that
takes place while he is absent on a visit to Europe. He had
implemented effective modernising reforms, but had ruled as a
dictator, accumulating a vast personal fortune while committing
brutalities to maintain his power.
