Cardinal Charles Lavigerie, in collaboration with Pope Leo XIII, attempts to reconcile the Roman Catholic Church and French Republic through the 'Algiers Toast'. Inviting the local French officers to lunch with him at Algiers, he effectively renounces his long-held monarchical sentiments and expresses support for the Republican constitution.
