In Brazil, Deodoro da Fonseca, the first President, who had taken over after leading the coup d'etat that deposed Pedro II, is now himself driven from office by a naval revolt. He is succeeded as president by Floriano Peixoto, who becomes known as 'the Iron Marshal' for his dictatorial style of government.
