The Austro-Hungarian prime minister, Count Taaffe, resigns after
the unity of his coalition collapses over the issue of universal
suffrage. While he had put forward a proposal for the extension of
the franchise, many of his colleagues refused to countenance the
measure. He is succeeded as Prime Minister by Alfred III, Prince of
Windisch-Grätz.
