After the resignation of French President Casimir-Perier, Felix Faure takes on the office of President, which he holds until 1899, while Alexandre Ribot becomes the new prime minister. Faure's presidency is marked by the completion of the conquest of Madagascar, but more notably by the continued contention of the Dreyfus Affair, with Faure opposing the retrial of this Jewish army officer falsely accused of treason.
