Empress Myeongseong of Korea is assassinated after having advocated a diplomatic move towards Russia. The influential politician Daewongon, who belongs to the pro-Japanese faction, supports the Japanese minister, under whose orders a group of assassins enter the royal palace and kill the Empress and two attendants.
