A rebellion of the native population breaks out in the Philippines against their Spanish colonial rulers. This leads after two years of military conflict to the declaration of an independent Philippine Republic, but this is short-lived, before the territory is ceded to the USA by Spain in the 1898 Treaty of Paris.
