The territorial possessions of the Royal Niger Company are
purchased by the British government, since in the European race to
control Africa, a private company cannot effectively hold its own
against the might of the states of France and Germany. The two
protectorates of northern and southern Nigeria are proclaimed on
1st January 1900.
