On August 18th, 1607, George Popham, leading an expedition by the Plymouth Company (part of the Virginia Company), landed with one hundred English colonists about a half mile from the mouth of Maine's Kennebec River. The colonists built a settlement they named Fort St. George but the colony foundered and its survivors returned to England in the fall of 1608.
