Charles I issues a charter for the territory north of the Potomac River, which will become Maryland, under the control of Lord Baltimore, a Roman Catholic, who is to make laws and tax colonists only with the consent of the adult male population. As the royal charter did not restrict settlement to Protestants, Catholics could settle in the colony.
