The term 'Internet' used to describe a single global TCP/IP network first appeared in the publication of RFC 675, the first full specification of TCP, written by Vinton Cerf, Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine from Stanford University. But the first fully operational TCP/IP-based wide-area network only appeared on January 1, 1983 when all hosts on the ARPANET were switched over from the older protocols.
