On the 16th of January, 2001 the allied military operation, led by the United States, launched the start of its offensive in the Gulf War, code-named Operation Desert Storm by the Americans, with an aerial bombardment. Its aim was the destruction of the Iraqi air force and anti-aircraft facilities. It followed Iraq's failure to comply with UN Resolution 678, which gave Iraq a deadline of until the 15th of January, 1991 to withdraw from Kuwait.
