In 1915 the 100km-long river Isonzo formed the border of Austria-Hungary and Italy, running north-south between high mountains at the head of the Adriatic. Today it lies in Slovenia. The Italians hoped to move north up the river valley and penetrate the heartlands of Austria around Vienna, but in many battles between 1915 and 1917 they were beaten back by the Austro-Hungarian defenders who always had the advantage of high ground. Many hundreds of thousands of Italian soldiers were sacrificed in attacks which had no real hope of success.
