Historical Context Note

The Treaty of Fontainebleau grants Napoleon the island of Elba as a sovereign principality, the continued title of Emperor, an income of 2m francs and a personal bodyguard of 4. He arrives on Elba on 4 May. Louis XVIII was restored to the French throne.
