Pursuing its own agenda of controlling any potential insurgency, and fearing Russian designs on India and interest in controlling the important trade routes which pass through Afghanistan, the British Indian Army invaded in 1839 and captured Kabul. However, securing peace and suzerainty proved impossible and they withdrew in 1842 after a considerable loss of life.
