The ruler of the pincipality, Basarab I, defeated his Hungarian overlord Charles I of Hungary at the Battle of Posada in 1330, thus gaining the independence of Wallachia. Subsequently, Walachia had to accept Ottoman suzerainty (in 1417), but was allowed to retain its own dynasty, territory, and religion. It was, however, compelled to pay tribute and grant a trade monopoly to the Ottoman Empire. There have been further moments of resistance against Ottoman rule in the course of the coming centuries, but they were short-lived.
