Dragos, the voivode of Maramures in the north of present-day Romania (then under the Kingdom of Hungary) is sent to Moldova to enforce Hungarian rule. He is followed by Bogdan, he former voivode of Maramures, who had lost his position in 1343 to due disagreement with the king of Hungary, Louis I. He establishes himself and his people in the new territory in 1359, declaring his independence from the Kingdom of Hungary.
