Having been a quasi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Hungary
from the 10th-11th century until the 16th century, it became a
semi-independent state ruled by Protestant Hungarian princes after
the 1526 defeat of Mohacs following which a part of the Kingdom of
Hungary became an Ottoman dependency. After 1711 until 1867 it was
incorporated into the Austrian Empire under the Habsburg
monarchy.
