Kanuri, led by Mai Dunama Dibbalemi (1221-1259), began to gain control over their neighbours during the 13th C. Dibbalemi was the first leader to convert to Islam. They controlled North African commerce. Internal disputes led the centre of power to shift from Kanem to Borno in the 14th C. The two were united under Idris Alawma (1575-1610). The Muslim state continued to expand, but it came under the control of the Hausa states in 1846.
