Although earlier forms of cannon had been used in China, the first European use of the equipment in warfare had been in Iberia during the 11th and 12th centuries. An English army first employed this powerful piece of artillery in a battle against the Scots in 1327, but it really came into its own for the first time at the Battle of Crecy. In this important battle of the Hundred Years' War against the French, a type of cannon known as a "Ribaldis" was used to attack Genoese mercenary soldiers, as well as the French cavalry, and was instrumental in securing the English victory.
