Although Henry VIII is often credited with introducing the game of tennis to England, its origins in the country can be traced back to the middle of the fourteenth century, when it was first developed as an outdoor game. At this point, the ball was hit with the palm of the hand; tennis rackets did not come into use until the sixteenth century.
