The battle was fought between the Ottoman army led by Sultan Bayezid and an allied force from Hungary, the Holy Roman Empire, France, Wallachia, Poland, the Knights Hospitaller, the Old Swiss Confederacy, the Republic of Venice, the Republic of Genoa and the Knights of St. John near the Danubian fortress of Nicopolis (Nikopol, Bulgaria). The defeat of the Crusaders is taken by some historians to mark the end of the Crusading spirit for European Christians.
