Cosimo de Medici's power was rooted in the wealth his family gained from its bank. He advocated popular policies which estranged him from the other ruling families in Florence. He was imprisoned, then exiled. However, his family managed to gain control of council of government that directed Florentine affairs in 1434. From then until 1537 Cosimo and his heirs were the effective rulers of the city.
