Benin was a major kingdom in the forested regions of West Africa. Hereditary royal power was established under Ewuare the Great (reigned until 1480). His son and successor Ozolua and grandson Esigie continued to rule over a flourishing kingdom throughout the sixteenth century and maintained healthy relations with the Portuguese.
